NYC's mayor Bill DeBlasio is no stranger to controversy having been in the national news before. But his latest order banning all protests may be the one to end it all. To know DeBlasio we must go back in time, looking at all his acts that led up to this. A list of questionable orders that were borderline illegal or unconstitutional, that he held no remorse for at all.
DeBlasio threatened to lock NYC down forcing everyone to shelter in place. He had no power to do so, over stepping his authority and Governor Cuomo stepped in to remind him.
AP News - Shelter in place? NYC braces but governor knocks idea down
“New Yorkers should be prepared right now for the possibility of a shelter-in-place order,” de Blasio said at a news briefing."
"New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo threw cold water on the idea two hours later in an interview on cable news station NY1. The Democrat said the city didn’t have the power to make such a declaration and any such order"
But there is more from the NYC mayor, this a clear violation of the constitution:
"New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio told the Big Apple’s religious community that fines and permanent closures may come their way if they refuse to stop worship services during the coronavrius pandemic."
Then theres this. While not unconstitutional, it brings up the worst moments in history when a politicians ties informants for the government with educating people:
But now we're at his latest which is the straw that broke the camels back. An undeniable abuse of power and violation of the constitution.
FOX 5 News NY - Protests not allowed during pandemic, say NYC mayor and police commissioner
"NEW YORK - After a news conference by LGBTQ activists critical of Mount Sinai Hospital's relationship with a religious organization during the coronavirus pandemic, the city's police commissioner and the mayor said "protests" would not be tolerated."
Agree with them or not, the first amendment still applies and while rights can be regulated, they can not be banned. When we put this behavior together we see a disturbing trend, abuse of power and flaunting the constitution. Are these impeachable acts? Local politicians would need to say so, but they are lock step with DeBlasios every move. Every one of his policies they overwhelming endorsed so no over-watch can be expected from that corner. Some will say "But what about Trump?", and they can refer to the supreme court rulings on that. The most we can hope for with DeBlasio is for AG Barr to step in and uphold the constitution.
